Wuhan Programme Office is currently implementing the "HSBC and Climate Partnership" project. Wuhan Programme office is currently implementing the global “HSBC and Climate Partnership’ project - a joint collaboration between the WWF British branch and HSBC Bank. A 5-year project (2007-2011), it singles out China, India, Brazil, United States and United Kingdom for project implementations. The objectives are to increase awareness of the impact of global climate changes, strengthen wetland ecosystem adaptability and regeneration, reduce greenhouse effects and lessen climate variability threats on natural ecosystem and socioeconomic development.

The scope of the project for Central and Lower Yangtze River includes:

•  Building wetlands and the protection of dolphins network; establish Central and Lower Yangtze wetlands and protection of dolphins network ; communicate and exchange success stories and findings in wetland protection ; provide on-site demonstrations on wetland conservation and its sustainability; implement systems and related training; enhance project managers capabilities to restore wetland ecosystem structure and function; improve response capabilities to mitigate impacts from climatic changes.

•  Implement environment and climate friendly agricultural model: set up lake fishery, livestock and poultry breeding practices that are clean and environmentally friendly; reduce greenhouse emissions and pollutants discharge, protect the lake ecosystem and achieve goals of being environmentally friendly, resource conserving and adaptive to climate variability.

• Promote irrigation and re-integrate Central and Lower Yangtze lake - river connection. The most direct impact of climate change is its effect on precipitation and rainfall spatial and temporal distributions, further aggravating the much needed water resource posing challenges to the natural ecosystem and socioeconomic developments. This project, based on the hydrology needs of a healthy wetland ecosystems, will take steps to reconnect seasonal and hydrological linkages between river and lake waterway, improve lake water quality, water storage and flow capabilities, to overall increase the area’s natural ecosystem and economic system adaptability and resilience to climate changes and its impact.

Prior to this, Wuhan Programme Office is also responsible for the implementation of WWF – HSBC “ Restore the Yangtze River Life Network” project. Field demonstration, collaborations, publicity and environment education etc are deployed to drive efforts in four areas: wetland resources conservation and rational usage, river-lake linkage, protected areas network building and integrated area management. Various government bodies and local communities have benefitted from such efforts. Some classic examples would include Honghu Lake wetland restoration, protection of rare species at Swan Island, Zhangdu lake-river linkage and developments of alternate community livelihoods.
